On Wednesday, Kenyan President William Ruto officially launched the Mombasa commuter railway service, designed to improve mobility between downtown Mombasa and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus.
- The project, undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), involved 16.8 km of meter-gauge railway, including 2.9 km of new sections and 13.9 km of rehabilitated old track.
- President William Ruto commended CRBC's contribution to Kenya's infrastructure, stating the service will make journeys faster, safer, and more predictable, and integrate Mombasa as a trade gateway for East Africa.
- The service will charge 50 Kenya shillings (about 0.39 U.S. dollars), enhance last-mile connectivity for the Madaraka Express, and created approximately 800 local jobs with over 90 percent local workforce participation.
