The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced that Kenyan teachers will transition to a new medical insurance scheme provided by the Social Health Authority (SHA) by December 1, 2025. This move comes as the current private insurance scheme nears its expiry, despite significant opposition from teacher unions.

• The new scheme will enroll teachers in the Public Service Fund, offering a premium SHA medical cover extending beyond core benefits to include a wide range of services.
• Teachers, including the principal member, spouse, and up to six dependents, will have access to outpatient and inpatient services, specialized care, annual check-ups, and emergency transport.
• Despite these benefits, teachers, led by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nakuru boss Anthony Gioshe, have vowed to reject the switch due to concerns about SHA service quality and the mandatory 2.75 percent deduction from their gross income, which they argue constitutes double taxation.
