Tanzania's main opposition party, Chadema, has denounced President Samia Suluhu Hassan's 98-percent election victory as a "mockery of the Democratic process," calling for fresh elections overseen by a credible body.

• Chadema spokesman John Kitoka reported "no less than 800 people" killed by security forces in election day protests, figures that could not be independently verified due to an internet blackout and journalist ban.
• Kitoka also dismissed the electoral commission's 87-percent turnout figure as "simply a joke," declaring the outcome illegitimate.
• Foreign Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo denied any knowledge of deaths or excessive force by the government.
