Kenya has ratified a significant East African Community (EAC) treaty amendment, aiming to accelerate goods clearance and boost cross-border trade. This move allows new member states to join the EAC Trade Remedies Committee, enhancing dispute resolution and fair trade practices.

  • Kenya is the second nation, after Burundi, to ratify the amendment to Article 24(2)a of the EAC Customs Union Treaty.
  • The expanded Trade Remedies Committee will comprise representatives from member states including Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DRC Congo, and Somalia, alongside current members Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
  • In the second quarter of 2025, trade within the EAC reached US$38.2 billion (Ksh4.94 trillion), with exports rising by 40.5 percent to US$18.6 billion (Ksh2.40 trillion).
