The East African Community (EAC) is developing a new regional strategy to sustainably utilize and conserve its vital blue economy resources. This initiative, in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), aims to boost economic development while enhancing food security and environmental protection.

• The strategy, named the Regional Blue Economy Strategy and Action Plan, is intended to guide operations from 2025–2034.
• Hon. Andrea Ariik, Deputy Secretary-General in charge of Infrastructure, Productive, Social, and Political Sectors, announced the plan at COP 30 in Belém, Brazil.
• The EAC's blue economy includes resources from oceans, lakes, and rivers, with new expansive coastlines from the accession of Somalia (over 3,000 km) and access to the Atlantic Ocean via DRC.
