Tanzania has cancelled its December 9 Independence Day celebrations following post-election unrest and economic setbacks. President Samia Suluhu directed funds be re-channeled to economic recovery and infrastructure repair.

• The decision was announced by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on Monday, November 24.
• Post-election protests on October 29 caused significant damage to public and private properties, including disruptions at the Port of Dar es Salaam.
• An internet blackout reportedly cost Tanzania an estimated Ksh30 billion (USD 238 million).
• The informal economy, supporting 80 per cent of the population, was severely impacted due to security concerns.
