Despite a coup attempt announced by disgruntled soldiers on Sunday, the presidency of Benin declared that President Patrice Talon remains in control. The military group, calling themselves the "Military Committee for Refoundation" (CMR), claimed to have removed Talon from office, but his entourage stated he was safe and the regular army was regaining control.

A source close to President Talon confirmed he was safe, stating the coup plotters "only control the television."
The French Embassy reported "gunfire at Camp Guezo" near the presidential residence in Cotonou.
Benin, like its neighbors Niger and Burkina Faso, has a history of coups since 1960.
