The United Nations in Kenya has named Professor Michael Ndurumo, East Africa's first deaf professor and founder of the Africa Institute of Deaf Studies and Research, as the 2025 United Nations in Kenya Person of the Year. He was recognized for his exceptional contributions to disability rights and inclusive education, celebrated during UN Day festivities commemorating the UN Charter's 80th anniversary.

• Prof. Ndurumo is credited with developing Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), now Kenya's official sign language and widely used across East Africa.
• He also drafted the law requiring sign language interpretation during news bulletins on all television stations and was instrumental in the inclusion of KSL in the 2010 Constitution.
• The Hifadhi Farmers’ Cooperative Society Group was named runner-up for its innovative beekeeping and forest conservation efforts in Kenya's Eburu Forest.
