National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula played a pivotal role as MPs defied President William Ruto's order to grant tax waivers and diplomatic immunities to the directors and foreign staff of the Global Centre on Adaptation (GCA), a Dutch firm linked to the University of Nairobi Chancellor Prof Patrick Verkooijen.
- MPs unanimously adopted a report revoking the President's Privileges and Immunities (The Global Centre for Adaptation) Order, 2025, rejecting the proposed tax and prosecution exemptions for GCA officials.
- The legislative action saw Speaker Wetang’ula change his stance, re-referring the matter from the Environment committee to the Delegated Legislation Committee for scrutiny.
- The GCA, a climate organization, was in the process of setting up its Kenya office, with plans to inject 3 million euros (over Sh452m) into programs for food security, infrastructure, and nature-based solutions.
