President William Ruto and UN Secretary-General António Guterres have launched the expansion and modernization of the United Nations Office at Nairobi, reinforcing the city's status as a global diplomacy hub. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed Nairobi as a critical pillar of global multilateralism during the launch of the major expansion of its headquarters in Kenya. The Sh43.8 billion expanded UN complex was officially opened and ground broken on Monday, May 11, 2026, aiming to bolster Nairobi's role in multilateral diplomacy. President Ruto announced the expansion will position Nairobi as a global hub for diplomacy and conferences, supported by significant government investment in the city's infrastructure.
