Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja is facing potential jail time for contempt of court following the erection of police roadblocks during recent protests. Kanja has also ordered an investigation into the arrest of Nakuru-based activist James Mbugua after a video emerged showing police officers manhandling him during a protest on June 25, 2026. Separately, Kanja ordered an urgent probe into viral footage of police violently assaulting a person with disability during the June 25 Gen Z anniversary protests in Nakuru. Human rights organization Vocal Africa alleges that five activists were arrested and subsequently disappeared following protests outside Parliament in Nairobi on Thursday.
