Gachagua faces backlash over Mungiki and tourism safety claims - July 2026

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced strong criticism from Kenya Kwanza leaders after making statements about tourism safety and Mungiki. He also stated that the country is not safe for Kenyans or foreigners amid calls for tourists to avoid Kenya. Kenya Kwanza leaders lashed out at Gachagua for his reckless tourism remarks. Senator Kipchumba Murkomen issued a stern warning to politicians funding militia groups, stating their actions risk destabilizing the country. CS Ruku also questioned Gachagua about his past nickname Kindiki Soprano and whether he had forgotten about mountain politics.
