Kenya is a significant step closer to commercial oil production with the arrival of a 1,500 horsepower drilling rig, the GW70, at the Port of Mombasa. The rig, valued at over KSh2.59 billion (USD 20 million), marks the beginning of preparations for Kenya's first commercial oil drilling in the South Lokichar Basin. Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote plans to generate 1,000 megawatts of electricity at his planned refinery in Lamu, with a portion to be sold to the Kenyan government. President William Ruto commenced an 8-day development tour of Kenya's Coast region, focusing on land reforms and significant industrial projects including the Lamu refinery groundbreaking where 200,000 title deeds were distributed.
