Kindiki heads to Lamu for refinery groundbreaking - September 2026

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is heading to Lamu county for a significant groundbreaking ceremony related to the Dangote East African Refinery. Security has been significantly enhanced in Lamu ahead of the official opening of a crude oil processing plant at the Lamu Port. Kenya is advancing plans for the proposed Dangote East African Refinery in Lamu, aiming to significantly boost regional oil processing and trade. President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki toured the site for the Dangote East African oil refinery ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony. As Dangote's refinery nears completion, it has become a focal point of intense scrutiny, sparking forceful questions and raising expert concerns regarding its impact and operations. At the same time, the Kenya-Rwanda fuel transport route has officially been activated, with the first consignment of 40,000 tonnes of fuel arriving in Mombasa, supporting regional fuel trade.
