Kalonzo Backs the Sh2.2 Trillion Dangote Refinery Project in Lamu - October 2026
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has backed the proposed Sh2.2 trillion Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery project in Lamu, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in foreign investments. The $16 billion refinery, led by billionaire Aliko Dangote, marks a significant entry into East Africa's energy sector and construction has officially begun in Lamu County. However, Kalonzo has also criticized the Kenyan government for proceeding with the refinery launch, citing unaddressed concerns from Lamu residents. Pentecostal leaders have similarly urged President William Ruto to address resident concerns regarding the proposed KSh 2 trillion Dangote oil refinery. Opposition leaders have expressed concerns that the process of launching the Dangote oil refinery lacks accountability, accusing President William Ruto of pursuing personal interests. Meanwhile, Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a has urged political leaders to refrain from politicising the Dangote Refinery project. President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to brokers and extortionists who might attempt to disrupt investments in the country, specifically mentioning the Lamu oil refinery project. Separately, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and her deputy Francis Mwangangi have vehemently denied claims that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka is aligning with President William Ruto's administration.
