President William Ruto has singled out Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for frequent public criticism, labeling him with various derogatory terms in direct responses and public clashes. Recent opinion polls indicate President Ruto is the frontrunner for the 2027 presidential race, though his support currently falls short of a first-round victory. At the same time, Sifuna has experienced a surge in political visibility through these confrontations with the President. Meanwhile, former President Uhuru Kenyatta has publicly criticized his successor, urging the Mt Kenya region not to repeat the "mistake" of electing Ruto in 2022 and warning against a repeat in 2027. Uhuru has also urged the opposition to unite, warning that their ambition to win the presidency in 2027 will fail without a cohesive front. In a separate development, the National Assembly has advanced the Elections (Amendment) (No.2) Bill, 2024 to its second reading, signaling potential changes to the country's electoral processes ahead of next year's polls. A recent report reveals that Kenya's general elections incurred costs significantly higher than the global benchmark.
