A Meru High Court has sentenced security guard Patrick Naweet to 30 years in prison for the murder of human rights activist Elizabeth Ekaru, who was brutally stabbed in January 2022.

• Mr. Naweet attacked Ms. Ekaru with a dagger, inflicting multiple stab wounds, with one wound measuring 21 centimeters deep.
• Justice Edward Muriithi ruled that the prosecution proved beyond doubt that the attack was premeditated.
• The judge emphasized that the defense's claims of self-defense were unsupported and characterized the act as a “cold-blooded killing.”
