Counties in Kenya are set to fully assume all devolved functions in the upcoming 2026–2027 budget cycle, following the allocation of necessary resources. This transition stems from the directives in Kenya Gazette Vol. CXXVI – No. 219, published on 16th December 2024.

The transfer follows the identification of 94 legislative gaps hindering devolution, which require harmonization.
The process is overseen by the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC), led by Dr. Kipkurui Chepkwony.
The transition aims to redefine roles and enhance service delivery closer to communities, in line with the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
