The Kenyan Cabinet is set to review a report addressing the disparity in hardship allowances for public servants, following concerns raised by Members of Parliament over varying criteria applied by different government arms.
- Different public service bodies currently designate varying numbers of hardship areas: Civil Service, County Governments, and State Corporations recognize 16; the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recognizes 44; and the Judiciary recognizes 21.
- Jane Imbunya, Principal Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, confirmed that a harmonized approach is under development to create a unified policy.
- The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), through Acting Secretary/CEO Margaret Njoka, has already harmonized housing allowances for teachers in Kilifi Municipality under Cluster 3, effective July 1, 2024, and plans a progressive review of all public sector allowances from 2025/26 to 2029/30.
