Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials and police officers were ambushed and attacked by armed goons on Friday, August 1, along Mombasa Road at Athi River while intercepting an overloaded lorry. The team, part of KeNHA’s Axle Load Enforcement Highway Unit (ALEHU), was conducting a routine inspection to crack down on axle load violations when the incident occurred.
- The goons used stones and crude weapons, damaging KeNHA vehicles, including the windscreen and rear shield.
- Daniel Njoroge, CEO of Danka Ltd (the KeNHA contractor for the Athi River cluster), stated that transporters mobilized the goons.
- Superintendent Fridah Wanja, Deputy in Charge of the Road Enforcement and Highways Unit, confirmed two trucks were intercepted and vowed legal action against those who facilitated the crime.
