Despite assurances from Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe three months ago that maize flour prices would not rise, Kenyans are now paying significantly more for the staple. A 2kg bag of maize flour currently costs between Ksh159 and Ksh175, a substantial increase from Ksh120 at the beginning of the year.
- A 90kg bag of maize is now selling for up to Ksh6,400, up from Ksh4,800 in January.
- Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe had previously stated on May 5 that there would be no price hike due to sufficient strategic maize reserves.
- Experts attribute the price increase to low supply caused by floods, delayed harvests, and rising demand from millers and animal feed makers.
