The Gates Foundation is set to launch an 8-year contraceptive option in Kenya, part of a global rollout of new family planning methods. This marks the first contraceptive in the world capable of preventing pregnancy for such an extended period.
- The new hormonal IUD will be introduced in Kenya, Nigeria, and potentially India.
- Anita Zaidi, President of the Gates Foundation’s Gender Equality Division, affirmed the launch as part of a $2.5 billion (Ksh324 billion) commitment to women’s health.
- The foundation also plans to roll out DMPA-SC, a self-injectable contraceptive, to over 35 countries globally, including 8 in Africa.
- Medical Services Principal Secretary, Ouma Olunga, confirmed the receipt of contraceptives including 16,272 sets of Levoplant, 69,800 doses of DMPA-SC, and 100,000 sets of Jadelle, funded by the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
