Police to Target Drivers in New Crackdown

Nearly 50 passengers have lost their lives in a fortnight...
✨ Key Highlights
The National Police Service (NPS) has announced an intensified nationwide crackdown on road non-compliance following a tragic surge in accidents that claimed nearly 50 lives in the past two weeks. This multi-pronged strategy aims to curb the increasing number of crashes on Kenyan roads.
- The crackdown will include speed monitoring of public service vehicles (PSVs) and commercial trucks, enforcing against overloading, cracking down on PSVs operating outside licensed routes, and conducting anti-drunk-driving operations.
- NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that new measures will also involve removing unlawful lights, verifying National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) licenses, impounding unroadworthy vehicles, and assessing PSV Sacco compliance.
- Passengers are urged to report reckless driving using toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112; the FichuakwaDCI line (0800 722 203); or the NPS WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
- The announcement follows recent major incidents, including a bus accident near Kisumu-Kakamega Road that killed over 20 people and another involving a matatu and lorry on Namanga Road in Kajiado County, which claimed at least seven lives.
