His decision was driven by concerns over former President Donald Trump's tightening immigration policies and a long-standing, unresolved court case concerning his marriage legitimacy which left him in a state of limbo.

• His decision to leave was influenced by fears that stricter immigration enforcement under President Trump's administration would target individuals like himself with ongoing legal cases.
• The Trump administration had offered up to Ksh129,000 (approximately $1,000 USD) and covered flight costs for undocumented immigrants willing to voluntarily leave the U.S. in May 2025.
• While Kangethe has returned to Kenya, his wife and three children remain legally in the U.S.
