Kenyan engineer Richard Matiangi escaped captivity in South Sudan after being abducted by an armed group on July 30. His colleague, James Kariuki, was killed in the ambush near the Democratic Republic of Congo border.

• Matiangi and four other abductees were told to escape by a rebel fighter after four days in captivity.
• The ambush occurred while the engineers were acquiring construction materials for Holy Trinity Church’s primary school and parish renovations.
• The incident resulted in two deaths and occurred in Morobo County, 200 kilometres from Juba.
• Matiangi is now accompanying Kariuki’s body to Kenya for burial.
