President William Ruto has launched the construction of the first affordable student housing under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme in Homa Bay County. The Tom Mboya University Student Village, a 2,064-bed facility, aims to address student accommodation challenges and is the initial phase of a nationwide initiative to provide 170,000 beds.

• The project is expected to create over 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, with Ksh.285 million in ring-fenced contracts for the Homa Bay Jua Kali sector.
• President Ruto emphasized that this initiative, part of the broader Housing Fund agenda, seeks to provide safe and conducive study environments, reducing risks associated with off-campus housing.
• The facility will feature a G+9 hostel block and a G+14 commercial hostel block, integrating academic and social infrastructure.
