President William Ruto has nominated Claris Awour Onganga as the Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), following Duncan Oburu Ojwang’s withdrawal from the position.

• Onganga’s nomination goes to the National Assembly for vetting after receiving recommendations from a selection panel.
• Ojwang declined the nomination citing personal reasons and a perceived conflict of interest to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.
• His withdrawal came after organizations like Katiba Institute and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) challenged his appointment in court, arguing it violated gender rules given the current Vice-Chair, Raymond Nyeris, is male.
