Ten children kidnapped last week in northern Cameroon have been freed in a rescue operation, though one captive died, according to regional governor Midjiyawa Bakari. The children were seized while travelling on a bus from Kousseri to Maroua and taken into Nigeria.

• 10 children were rescued by soldiers from the Cameroonian army and an anti-jihadist taskforce including soldiers from Nigeria and Chad.
• Approximately 15 people were taken captive in total, with around 50 individuals arrested in connection with the incident.
• The kidnapping prompted public accusations of inaction against the government, as the Islamist group Boko Haram, known for similar abductions including nearly 300 girls in Nigeria in 2014, has been waging an insurgency in the region.
