The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has acquired 10 new Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes to boost efficiency and enhance operations at the Port of Mombasa. This acquisition is part of an ongoing equipment modernisation program aimed at reducing cargo dwell times and improving vessel turnaround.

• These new cranes are capable of lifting up to 45 tonnes.
• The Port of Mombasa handled a record 40.99 million metric tonnes of total cargo throughput last year.
• Rwanda announced plans to increase cargo movement through Mombasa due to improved efficiency, despite 70% of its imports currently passing via Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Port.
• Amb. Ernest Rwanucyo, Rwanda’s High Commissioner to Kenya, highlighted Mombasa’s efficiency and well-developed road and rail networks as key factors.
• In 2024, Rwanda’s imports via Mombasa increased, particularly in fast-moving consumer goods, industrial equipment, and pharmaceutical supplies.
