Kenya is significantly behind in achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of eliminating poverty, with over 14 million people currently living in extreme poverty. This places Kenya among countries lagging seven years before the deadline, despite some progress in other SDGs.
- As of today, 14,043,800 people in Kenya, representing 26% of the population, live in extreme poverty, defined by the World Bank as less than $2.15 (Ksh.288) per day.
- The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025 highlights Kenya's downward trend in poverty eradication, with extreme poverty being most prevalent in rural areas (86%) and affecting 51% of females and 49% of males.
- While Kenya has made progress in areas like quality education, access to electricity, responsible consumption and production, and climate action, significant challenges remain in achieving zero hunger, good health and well-being, sustainable cities and communities, and addressing issues of peace, justice, and strong institutions highlighted in 2024.
