During the Shakahola murder trial in Mombasa, a protected witness described her horrifying experience, revealing she lost all seven of her children to starvation while under the influence of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie.

• The witness, identified as V.M.M., recounted how Mackenzie’s Good News International (GNI) Church teachings led loyalists to abstain from food and water, believing it was the only path to seeing God.
• Chief Inspector Sawe Kigen provided evidence, including video documentation, detailing the discovery of severely emaciated survivors and bodies at the Shakahola crime scene, discovered between April 19 and October 24, 2023.
• Followers were encouraged to purchase land in Shakahola for Sh1,000 per acre, where they were instructed not to build permanent structures and were forbidden from interacting with "outsiders" or seeking medical care.
