Hundreds of motorists, including mourners transporting a body, spent Thursday night stranded on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near the Gilgil weighbridge due to a massive traffic jam. The situation worsened by Friday midday, compelling police to intervene as calls for the expedited construction of the Rironi–Mau Summit Expressway intensify.

• The gridlock originated Thursday afternoon following the NYS graduation ceremony in Gilgil, attended by President Ruto, combined with an accident involving a trailer and a personal car.
• According to Gilgil Deputy County Commissioner Willy Cheboi, an initial accident and subsequent overlapping drivers caused the highway to become impassable, taking police over five hours to clear.
• The crisis deepened on Friday morning when another trailer developed mechanical issues, blocking a lane. Among those affected were mourners from Mombasa en route to Siaya, forced to spend the night with a body, facing challenges with food and sanitation.
