Burkina Faso’s unelected transitional parliament has unanimously passed a bill outlawing homosexual acts, introducing jail terms of up to five years. This move comes a little over a year after an amended family code critical of homosexuality was adopted by the cabinet.

• Punishments include prison sentences of between two and five years, as well as fines, with foreign nationals also facing deportation.
• Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala announced the new law, which now awaits the signature of military leader Capt Ibrahim Traoré.
• Previously, Burkina Faso was among only 22 out of 54 African countries that allowed same-sex relations, with the new law aligning it with a growing crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights across the continent.
