Nairobi Members of Parliament affiliated with Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have welcomed the decision by Nairobi County Assembly members (MCAs) to halt impeachment proceedings against Governor Johnson Sakaja. This comes after MCAs, initially gathering over 70 signatures for an impeachment motion, made a “dramatic turn of events” giving Sakaja 60 days to resolve issues.
- The ODM-allied MPs, including ODM Nairobi County Chairperson George Aladwa, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, and Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwuor (Jalang’o), lauded the MCAs’ shift toward dialogue, emphasizing that destabilizing Nairobi would destabilize Kenya.
- Elachi stated, "We cannot let our city be held ransom by politics and self-interests. If Nairobi is destabilised, Kenya is destabilised."
- The lawmakers also cited several ongoing advancements under Sakaja's administration, including the popular Dishi na County feeding program serving over 316,000 learners daily, and the permanent employment of 3,500 Nairobians in waste management.
- They warned against the “misuse of impeachment proceedings,” stating, “Attempts for removal of elected Governors from office by impeachment have become a subject of abuse. We stress the importance of stability for service delivery and do not support the creation of instability where there are no serious grounds.”
- Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticized the attempted impeachment as a “serious fluke and political blunder,” warning of undermining the Nairobi County Assembly's integrity.
