The African Union (AU) is spearheading a global campaign, “Correct The Map,” to replace the long-standing Mercator map projection with the more accurate Equal Earth projection, arguing that the Mercator significantly distorts the true size of Africa and other landmasses, fostering a misleading perception of the continent.

• Africa is approximately 14 times larger than Greenland, yet they often appear similar in size on Mercator maps.
• The campaign is endorsed by the African Union, a political and economic organisation of 55 African countries, and led by advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa.
• The World Bank confirmed it is phasing out the Mercator projection on web maps, while Google Maps switched from Mercator on desktop to a 3D globe view in 2018.
