The Controller of Budget has urged the National Treasury to swiftly verify and settle outstanding government bills totaling over KSh 524.8 billion. These mounting arrears are severely impacting private sector cash flows and undermining business confidence in Kenya.

• The total government unpaid obligations stood at KSh 524.84 billion by June 2025, a rise from KSh 516.27 billion a year prior.
• State corporations are responsible for the majority of the backlog, owing KSh 404.33 billion (77%) of the outstanding bills.
• A committee led by former Auditor General Edward Ouko found that only KSh 206 billion out of KSh 475 billion in reviewed claims were authentic.
