The Thwake Dam project, costing an estimated Ksh 82 billion, is finally nearing completion after being postponed five times. Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo announced the imminent completion on Thursday, September 4, promising benefits for millions in Makueni and Kitui.
- Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa, the fifth CS to oversee the project, stated completion by mid-2025.
- The project, funded partially by the African Development Bank, faced controversy over repeated delays and cash flow issues with its main contractor, China Gezuba Group Company.
- Once complete, the Thwake Dam will provide safe drinking water, irrigate over 40,000 hectares, and generate 20MW of hydropower.
