Six people were killed and up to 20 others are feared trapped after a gold mine collapsed on Friday in Um Aud area, west of the city of Berber in River Nile state, Sudan. Rescue efforts are ongoing at the artisanal mine.

• Sudan's gold industry largely finances the war efforts between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since April 2023.
• Hassan Ibrahim Karar, executive director of the Berber locality, confirmed the accident.
• Despite the conflict, Sudan announced a record gold production of 64 tonnes for 2024, with much of the gold smuggled through neighboring countries before reaching the United Arab Emirates.
