The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) seeks to detain a police officer, Erick Gitonga Nyaga, in connection with the fatal shooting of two boda boda riders in Kiambu. A court ruling on IPOA’s application is expected on Tuesday, September 9.

• Erick Gitonga Nyaga was brought before the Kiambu Law Courts after being accused of killing Kennedy Ojuma (38) and Stephen Mwenda (39) on Sunday, September 8, along the Thika–Garissa Highway.
• According to IPOA’s assistant director of forensics, Paul Njehia, Nyaga, appearing intoxicated, allegedly refused assistance from traffic police after an accident and fatally shot the two riders.
• IPOA requests three weeks detention for ballistic analysis of Nyaga’s Duma pistol (serial number D09220515), postmortems, witness statements, and scene investigations.
• Nyaga’s lawyer, Philip Langat, opposed the detention, arguing suspects should be arraigned within 24 hours and stating Nyaga would cooperate while out on bail.
