Students from Meru University staged demonstrations and blocked the Meru–Maua highway on Tuesday, protesting rising insecurity and a lack of streetlights in residential areas around the institution. Police dispersed the students with teargas after they lit bonfires and hurled stones.

• The protest was organized by the Student Association of Meru University (SAMU) due to frequent attacks, muggings, assaults, and stabbing incidents affecting students.
• The SAMU Secretary General Cosmas Emerkwa and President Teddy Samuel stated that prior attempts to engage authorities had not resulted in meaningful action.
• This is not the first protest; students previously demonstrated on January 28, 2025, after a Technical University of Mombasa student was fatally stabbed in the Mascan area, where gangs have targeted students.
