Teachers affiliated with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) have rejected the government's plan to enroll them in the Social Health Authority (SHA) medical insurance scheme, despite their current private scheme nearing expiry. They cite concerns expressed by other civil servants, such as the police, regarding the SHA's effectiveness and problems encountered when seeking treatment.
KNUT Nakuru boss Anthony Gioshe urged teachers to reject the move, expressing a lack of faith in the SHA. - Teachers highlighted their existing cover's benefits, which include inpatient, outpatient, maternity, optical, and dental benefits, plus group life and last-expense funeral coverage for the teacher, spouse, and up to four children.
- The rejection comes ahead of a meeting between President William Ruto and over 3,000 teachers' representatives on Friday, September 12, at State House, Nairobi.
