Uganda is set to host Africa’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) factory, the Aeonian Project, inside the 600MW Karuma Hydropower Plant on the Nile River. This 100MW hyperscale facility, entirely powered by renewable energy, aims to revolutionize data processing on the continent.
- The first phase, including a 15MW AI module and a 10MW supercomputer called USIO, will go live in the second half of 2026, with the full project completed by 2028.
- The project is supported by global partners including Germany’s GIZ, Finland’s HAUS, the EU Development Fund, and features AI infrastructure firm MDCS.AI and U.S. chipmaker NVIDIA.
- CEO of Synectics Technologies Oladele Oyekunle stated, “This is about empowering Africa to control its data backbone responsibly, sustainably, and sovereignly.”
