First Lady Rachel Ruto has launched the second phase of a program targeting HIV, teen pregnancy, and sexual and gender-based violence, dubbed “The Triple Threat.” This initiative aims to combat rising rates among young people, especially given the alarming increase in HIV infections in Kenya.
- In 2024, Kenya recorded almost 20,000 new HIV infections, a significant 19 percent increase from the previous year.
- The initiative is driven by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), and the second phase will benefit Samburu, West Pokot, Homa Bay, and Uasin Gishu Counties.
- Currently, over 80,000 young people aged between 10 and 19 years in Kenya are living with HIV.
