Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is launching a new Commuter Rail service in Mombasa to connect the SGR Terminus with the Mombasa Central Business District (CBD). President William Ruto will commission the Ksh.4.2 billion project on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, aiming to ease the 14-kilometre journey for thousands of commuters.
- The project, completed in August 2025, involved improving 16.6 kilometres of metre-gauge railway and building a 2.3-kilometre railway bridge.
- The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, projects the service will transport approximately 4,000 commuters daily upon commencement of operations.
- The service will include stops at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras, and Mombasa CBD.
