Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged Japan to squarely confront its wartime history to gain respect and prevent repeating past mistakes on the 80th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II.

• Wang Yi made the remarks after the Tenth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, clarifying China’s stance on historical issues.
• Wang emphasized that Japan was defeated 80 years ago, accepted the Potsdam Proclamation, and unconditionally surrendered, with international instruments like the Cairo Declaration and Potsdam Proclamation defining Japan's war responsibility and requiring the return of territories like Taiwan.
• Wang criticized some forces in Japan for glorifying, denying, and distorting their invasion history, and seeking to rehabilitate war criminals, calling such actions contemptible and self-defeating.
