Africa has launched its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centre in Uganda, a pivotal project aimed at bringing African data back to the continent from foreign servers. This initiative promises to enhance data control and foster digital independence across the region.
- The first phase of the project is estimated to cost $1.2 billion (Sh157.2 billion), running on 100 megawatts of renewable energy, with rollout beginning by mid-next year.
- Developed by Synectics Technologies in partnership with Schneider Electric, Nvidia, and Turner & Townsend, the facility will host an AI Center of Excellence under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.
- The project is set on over 80 acres and seeks to transform Africa into a net exporter of digital skills within five years, addressing the continent's less than one percent share of global data centre capacity.
