Learning has been paralyzed at the University of Nairobi (UoN) after lecturers began a nationwide strike on Wednesday, September 17, demanding the implementation of long-awaited collective bargaining agreements.
- The strike was initiated by members of the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), and Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA).
- Unions are demanding the release of Ksh2.73 billion from Phase Two of the 2021-2025 CBA, Ksh7.9 billion outstanding from the 2017-2021 CBA, and the negotiation and registration of the 2025-2029 CBA.
- Constantine Wesonga, UASU Secretary General, accused the government of ignoring agreements and failing to fully implement both the 2021–2025 and 2025–2029 CBAs.
