President William Ruto has inaugurated the new Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, designed to revolutionize urban transport by connecting Mombasa to its Central Business District (CBD).

The new service aims to alleviate traffic congestion, improve reliability, and cut commuting times between Mombasa CBD and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus.
The rail line will serve up to 4,000 passengers daily, enhancing connectivity and making the Madaraka Express more accessible.
The launch took place at Kilometre Zero, the historic starting point of the Kenya-Uganda Railway nearly 130 years ago, linking 13.8 km of metre gauge railway to the new 2.8 km SGR connection.
