Africa has launched its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) data center in Uganda, a pivotal step to bring data back to the continent and empower local institutions and businesses. This "digital city" is being developed by Synectics Technologies in partnership with Schneider Electric, Nvidia, and Turner & Townsend, aiming to boost Africa's digital sovereignty and innovation.

  • The first phase of the project will cost an estimated $1.2 billion (Sh157.2 billion) and will run on 100 megawatts of renewable energy.
  • Oladele Oyekunle, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Synectics Technologies, highlighted the initiative's goals: managing and processing data, supporting R&D, providing advisory services, and training local talent, including an AI Center of Excellence.
  • The project aims to reduce Africa’s reliance on foreign expertise, transforming the continent into a net exporter of digital skills within five years, and could contribute up to $1.5 trillion (KES 195 trillion) to Africa's GDP by 2030.
