Safaricom is implementing a massive upgrade to its M-PESA platform, transitioning to a new cloud-native architecture dubbed “Fintech 2.0.” This switch, occurring during a three-hour downtime on Monday, September 22nd, 2024, from 0:30 AM to 3:30 AM, represents a fundamental re-imagining of the service.
- The new platform will support over 10,000 transactions per second (TPS), a significant increase from the current 5,000 TPS.
- A core team of 210 people, supported by over 90 onsite and 300+ offshore partner resources, developed the new system.
- Safaricom is targeting an ambitious 99.999% service availability with the new Active-Active setup.
- The migration follows two full rounds of System Integration Tests (SIT) and User Acceptance Tests (UAT), and two successful dress rehearsals.
- A three-month, 7*24 “Hypercare” period with over 20+ onsite resources will follow the migration to ensure a smooth transition.
